Esmeralda Deputy Sheriff is Killed in Vehicle Rollover
Esmeralda county deputy sheriff Gary Lee Johnson was killed in a one-car rollover accident Friday Dec. 2. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on the Mohawk mine road, three miles south of Silver Peak. A spokesman for the sheriff’s department said that Johnson was on his regular patrol in the Silver Peak area, where he was a resident deputy, when the accident occurred. The Nevada highway patrol investigated the accident, which was first discovered and reported by Johnson’s fellow deputy Dennis Gaddy.
Johnson had worked for the Esmeralda county sheriff’s department the part nine months but had been a Nye county resident for the part 20 years. Before moving to Silver Peak with his family earlier this year, Johnson had most recently lived and worked in Smokey valley. He also served with the Nye county sheriff’s department in the early 1980s.
