Officer Geo. Cotant Killed in Auto Accident on Mountain City Road – Dies as Car Overturns at Jack Station

Victim of Wreck is Found Sitting at the Wheel of Small Coupe – Neck is Broken

Funeral Arrangements to be Announced Pending Word from Relatives

George Cotant, constable of Mountain City, was killed early last evening on the Mountain City road in an automobile accident just a few hundred yards this side of Jack Station. When discovered this morning he was sitting in the front seat, behind the steering wheel, death having been instantaneous from a broken neck.

He had driven down from Mountain City Tuesday and spent yesterday forenoon in Elko attending to business matters, leaving here at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. He reached the North Fork store at 5:30 in the evening and after spending some time there, started on for Mountain City.

Car Turns Completely Over

The car, an open roadster with a cloth top, was standing upright on its wheels within 50 feet of the road when found. He had evidentially lost control of the car when it came off a short steep hill, and as it started up the opposite hill, it left the road, turning completely over

George Cotant was born and raised in Elko and spent practically all his life here After attaining his majority he lived in Elko and was appointed deputy constable, and this line of work he had followed practically all his life, serving several terms as constable of Elko, deputy sheriff, under Sheriff Harris, and jailer for many years.

Appointed M.C. Constable Last spring the board of county commissioners appointed Cotant constable at Mountain City… He leaves a father, William Cotant… brothers Dewey Taufer of Elko, Myron Cotant of Oakland; sisters Minnie Taufer of Elko, Mrs. Nellie Girioux of Winnemucca, Mrs. Millie Hines of Oakland…
