Deputy London and his partner Deputy Lynn McKnight was stopped along the Boulder Highway near the small community of Whitney. They were talking to a soldier who was hitchhiking to Boulder City which was about twenty miles south of Whitney. They were attempting to flag a ride for the soldier when the accident happened. The Deputies flagged a passing car which stopped and the soldier was getting into the vehicle with the Deputies standing alongside the car. The suspect vehicle approached at a high rate of speed, striking both Deputies. Deputy McKnight was struck first and sustained an injury to his leg. Deputy London was also struck by the right fender of the suspect vehicle and thrown on to his patrol car and died at the scene. The suspect’s vehicle speed away from the scene but was pursued by a citizen. The driver and passenger were subsequently stopped and arrested for the death of Deputy London.
