PAIR HELD IN DESERT CHASE AFTER LANDER DEPUTY DIES
EUREKA (UPI) – Two teenage youths, whose car took authorities on an 80-mile desert chase resulting in the death of a part-time deputy sheriff, have been captured.
Two youths, identified as runaways from the Stewart Indian School, were arrested after they abandoned their car about 15 miles southwest of here. Neither offered any resistance.
The deputy was Lawrence Schmidtlein, a 67 year old retired rancher and miner, who often substituted for regular Lander County deputies on their days off.
He was killed Monday when his speeding patrol car went out of control and overturned on loose gravel on State Highway.
