Death of Jailer Gregory
Our late County Jailer, U.S. Gregory died at 4 o’clock yesterday morning, from the effects of the severe injuries received at the hands of Le Fever and Blair, in effecting their escape from the county jail in the city, a few days ago. In endeavoring to prevent the escape of the scamps, he was struck on the head with a bottle, inflicting a severe wound, and his hand was also badly jammed in shutting him into the cell just evacuated by the prisoners. Erysipelas supervened, and Mr. Gregory being 71 years of age, his system had received too great a shock from which to recover. He arrived in Nevada City, California, in 1849, and had been a resident of that place until he came to this city. He leaves many warm friends and relatives here as well as in California, to mourn his death.
